Mercadona: creating a campus to boost agility
In 2019 Mercadona launches the new headquarters project, which is born with the ambition of moving its almost 2,000 workers located in different offices in Valencia to a new complex in Albalat dels Sorells. In this project, Mercadona sees the opportunity to work on a great challenge: to bring the world of the shops closer to the corporate workers, creating a bridge between the two through the implementation of multidisciplinary teams and more agile processes.

To this end, it has the support of bicg, which is carrying out a process of more than 4 years in which it accompanies Mercadona from the ideation to the materialisation of the strategy in its new office.
As a result of a spatial and work dynamics study, a model based on the following pillars is defined:
- A spatial model adapted to the needs of professionals and connected to shops.
- A more flexible and dynamic way of working, driving innovation, agility, and autonomy.
- The adoption of New Ways of Working driven by an innovative working environment, which seamlessly integrates space, technology and processes.
Throughout the project, space becomes an enabler to better perform the work. . The definition and design of the space must respond to the needs of the workers, but, in addition, the magnitude of the change makes it necessary to design an accompanying process so that, at the same time as the “physical means” are modified, a process of change is carried out in the “mental means”.
Through a structured change management methodology, involving Mercadona’s employees, sessions are conducted to provide tools for adapting to change, an open debate is generated on resistance to change, and the specific requirements of the work teams are gathered. In this way, we guarantee that Mercadona’s own professionals actively participate in shaping the change, acting as a transmission belt, co-designing solutions, and ensuring that everyone has the same information to undertake the transformation.
In a process that will last until 2025 with the completion of the construction, which will include the co-innovation center, Mercadona will progressively incorporate groups that will gradually adopt new habits and behaviours in line with the new model, evolving their way of working and accompanying their strategic priorities.
