ABB “builds the future”

The challenge: Position yourself as an employer brand

In early 2019, ABB initiated a transformative project with the goal of designing a new “Smart Building” and optimizing their work environment to align with their future-oriented visions. The company sought to create a workspace that aligned with their modern business demands while enhancing the overall employee experience.

ABB identified primary goals for the project: supporting modern and agile working methods, enhancing brand visibility, and promoting innovation. By designing a modern and flexible office, ABB aimed to attract top talent, boost employee satisfaction, and improve retention rates. Secondly, throughout the design of a new office space, ABB sought to integrate the company’s branding to create a cohesive and recognizable image across the workspaces. Finally, the flexible layout encourages spontaneous interactions, sparking innovation. With this new office concept, ABB is reinforcing its competitive edge and positioning itself for future growth.

To achieve these goals, the project team designed the new Smart Building and implemented a series of change management initiatives to successfully define the change and guide the workforce through the transformation. The multi-floor building was designed to become a collaborative and multifunctional space, which aligned with ABB’s future vision.

Key Initiatives:

The following are examples of key initiatives that were undertaken by the project team to guide the transformation:

  • Surveys and Expert Interviews: Qualitative and quantitative data was collected from ABB employees to identify opportunities for change and tailor the New Work environment directly to the feedback of employees.

  • Change Agents and Information Sessions:Dedicated change agents were appointed to guide teams through the transformation process, so every employee was heard and informed throughout the process. Information sessions allowed for the New Work method to be explained, for the Multispace Concept to be understood, and for general project updates to be shared.

  • Employee Co-Design Workshops and Q&A SessionsFacilitated workshops with Change Agents helped gather employee input on workspace design and layout, ensuring their needs and preferences were integrated into the final architectural design. In parallel, Q&A sessions allowed for questions and concerns to be addressed, whilst providing the opportunity for continuous suggestions and feedback to be heard and implemented.

  • Digital Space Planning Tool: The project team at ABB used the HyTeams Administration space planning tool to place departments based on existing communication relationships. This optimized the use of their office spaces and enhanced collaboration across teams.

  • IT Integration:New IT concepts were introduced to improve hybrid teamwork. Room modules were fitted with the newest technology and IT trainings supported employees to ensure seamless adaptation of such new tools.

Tailored Workspace DesignThe architecture and design team created distinct room modules and collaboration spaces that support the daily tasks performed by ABB employees. Likewise, the design team integrated ABB’s brand and offered a clear, recognizable identity throughout the new building.

By designing workspaces with employees in mind and leveraging direct analyses and feedback, ABB successfully achieved their original goals by creating a dynamic environment that supports flexibility, enhances employee collaboration, and stimulates innovation. Today, the Smart Building serves as a hub for innovation and is a symbol of ABB’s forward-thinking approach to work.

At the opening ceremony, Mannheim’s mayor Michael Grötsch emphasized that the new ABB campus was “a milestone in the history of German ABB and of Mannheim as a business hub”. The project had successfully implemented ABB’s long-term vision of sustainable growth and successfully. “set an example for the future”. We are excited to see what’s next!
